Celebrating International Women's Day
In honour of International Women’s Day, we reached out to Dana Mahon, author, yogini, and wellness consultant, to share her journey as an Epicure Consultant.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what led you to Epicure?
My background in holistic health and wellness, fitness and yoga, stems back to my teens, which is a long time ago! It has always been what guided me, both personally and professionally. From my corporate work at UBC to running my yoga studio on Vancouver Island, sharing my love for healthy living has always been my greatest love. I was delighted to be introduced to Epicure in April of 2019 and I shared it a month later while hosting a housewarming gathering. I had no idea what all the hype was about! I learned quickly when 16 friends came, and now I wonder if they came for me or for Epicure! (Laughs). Eight hundred dollars later I was amazed. Not only did I fall in love with the product, it became the perfect addition of services for my clients, friends, and family!
The theme for IWD 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge —what does this mean to you?
To me, it is a wonderful opportunity to check in with our (my) own actions and behaviours first and foremost. It is one thing to call people out on their (poor or ignorant) behaviour which is important at times for sure; but it is another thing to ask myself where the opportunities are to change my own; to take a good look in the mirror and ask, how can I be better, how can I grow, and where can I truly contribute to the collective consciousness.
How has Epicure empowered you to live your life to the fullest - and, what challenges have you faced along the way?
I could list the challenges I’ve experienced, but instead I will say that I am so grateful I chose the resources (yoga, aromatherapy, holistic health and nutrition, positive people), that would allow me to serve and heal myself and move through the challenging times with as much grace and love as possible, and we always have that choice (as difficult as it can be at times). I certainly have a long way to go at being perfect at it, but I am committed to practicing every day.
What I absolutely love about Epicure is that it brings me true joy. I found this company (or it found me!), and it has provided me with the opportunity to share my love of healthy, sustainable, ethically sourced food, and my passion for wellness, with people who want to embark on, or continue living a life where nourishment and health have a seat at the table. This brings me joy to no end.
You wrote a book called Release Your Inner Wild—the modern-day women's guide to reconnecting with your true Self; honoring your health, passion, and power. Can you talk a bit about how nourishing your body with good food (along with self-care and movement) is so important for women - especially now, during the pandemic?
Oh gosh! I could write a book about it hah! All I can speak to is the impact that wellness practices have had on my life and they are vast and powerful, and truthfully I don’t know where I’d be without them. Nourishing healthy food, mindful movement, ancient self-care practices, being true to ourselves, all of these together, when practiced with consistency and intention, have a cumulative effect that creates this extraordinary capacity within us. Together, they cultivate an environment in which all of our systems can thrive, forming a healthy, grounded, conscious human who not only walks through the world, but does so with a loving heart and open eyes.
On a practical level, living one’s wellness can be as simple as introducing one practice at a time and noticing the effects. No one says we have to do all of the things all of the time! My mission in life is to show women that it doesn’t have to be time-consuming, expensive, or complicated to practice wellness.
The world always needs healthy people; emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually, but perhaps now more than ever before. Of course, it is always a good time to introduce a practice, but with the current challenges, socially, economically, and ecologically, and with extreme challenges surrounding the mental and emotional health of our society as a whole, I believe it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves, for our own benefit and that of others.
