Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day - with bannock!

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day—a great opportunity to commemorate and learn more about the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences, and histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada.

To celebrate the day, Epicure Consultant Juniper Blyth is sharing her grandmother’s recipe for bannock—a traditional fry bread. Give it a try and be sure to tag #EpicureOfficial in your creations!

BANNOCK

3 cups flour

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 tsp salt

5 teaspoons baking powder

1 1/2 cups milk

1/4 cup oil

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

  • In a small bowl mix milk and oil. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Make a well in the flour then add all the liquid mixture. Stir with a fork until all the flour is just moistened. DO NOT OVER MIX!!

  • Scoop the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Lightly knead dough about five times. Roll to about 1/2 inch thick.

  • Cut into round or square shapes. Place bannock close together on an un-greased baking sheet. Bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Tip: Add 1 tbsp granulated sugar and 1/4 tsp of Cinnamon for a sweeter treat (add it to the flour mixture).

Add Feisty Green Sauce to olive oil for a tasty dipping sauce!
